The Prairie Traditions Bow Hospital can help you refurbish that old bow of yours that is in need of a restoration or that might be a little too heavy. We specialize in weight reductions, and most bows can be reduced by approximately 10% of the original weight, some a little more, some a little less.
Our bows are tools that often are subjected to heavy use. Whether age has caught up to you, your bow, or a combination of both, we can help get you back in the field together again. If your favorite old bow is in need of a face lift we can restore its original luster. Over time, nicks, scratches, and dings can take their toll and allow moisture into the wood of your bow. The sooner these are caught the better for the long term health of your favorite old bow. Also, finishes can simply fade and yellow over time, and the bow just doesn't have the same luster it once did. A complete refinish can make your bow look like new again.
We can add, repair, or replace overlays and damaged tips, add inserts, or tackle any other types of repairs you might need.

We use a catylized varnish finish to protect your bow for years to come. First, the pores of the wood grain are sealed to provide a smooth even surface. A gloss finish is applied for the first few coats, and are wet sanded in between coats. The final coat is applied using a hunters flat non-reflective finish. The reason for using different products during the process is that the gloss coats are more durable and provide your bow the greatest protection while allowing the beauty of the wood to show through. Since most hunters would prefer a non-reflective finish for hunting, only the final coat is applied in flat which leaves the bow with a beautiful low shine luster. At your option, we can also finish with a final gloss coat which is then hand polished to a brilliant shine.
One common question we receive is regarding whether to have some weight reduced from a bow. To me, this is a personal descision that only the customer can decide. Reducing weight on a bow does involve sanding the limbs and will require that the bow be refinished after completion. Occasionally, we have customers who would like some weight taken off, but would like to do the refinishing on their own, and this is fine.
To decide whether or not to reduce weight on a bow, ask yourself a couple of questions. Is the bow special to you in some way, yet is too heavy for you to shoot comfortably anymore? Do you ever intend to sell the bow? Is the bow in need of refinishing anyway? Feel free to call and discuss your own situation and plans for the bow and I will give you an honest and frank opinion on whether it might be a good idea for you.
Please call to make arrangements before sending your bow. This helps us know what might be coming in and we can discuss the work you are hoping to have done and what the current turn around time on the project will be. Turn around time does vary depending on just what has been coming in lately, but I will always try to give you an accurate estimate on when you can expect to have the bow back in your hands. If you prefer not to have the bow gone while you wait, a deposit of $50 will secure a spot on the schedule and we will contact you when it is time to begin work on your bow.
Return shipping is not included. The actual cost of return shipping will be added to your final bill, plus $5.00 for packaging. Shipping cost varies by location, but one piece bows are generally around $30, and take down bows approximately $20.
When sending in your bow for work please include your name, address, and complete contact information.
We look forward to hearing from you and taking care of your bow refinishing needs.
